About the Score

How is the Grain Score calculated?

The score (0–100) blends three weighted components: nutrition (a Nutri-Score-style assessment per 100g, with stricter thresholds for drinks), additives (tiered penalties, plus a small bonus for recognized whole-food ingredients), and processing & certifications (NOVA processing level, with bonuses for organic and non-GMO certification). The standard weighting is 70% nutrition, 20% additives, 10% processing; minimally processed products with clean ingredient lists shift toward ingredient quality. Caps and floors keep the result honest — heavily sweetened or ultra-processed products can't score high, and plain whole foods can't score low. Read the full methodology with a worked example.

Which regulator does Grain use?

Grain frames ingredient context with the authority that governs the market you're in — the FDA in the US, EFSA in the European Union, the FSA in the UK and Ireland, Health Canada in Canada, FSANZ in Australia and New Zealand, and the FSVO in Switzerland (Swissmedic for cosmetics and supplements). Ingredient citations may also reference international assessments from bodies like the WHO and IARC. Your region is detected automatically and can be changed in the app.

Is the Grain Score medical advice?

No. The Grain Score is an informational tool. It is not a diagnosis, not a recommendation to avoid anything specific, and not a substitute for a doctor or dietitian. Always read the product label and consult a qualified professional for health decisions.

Why does my product score differently than it does for someone else?

The base methodology is identical for everyone. If you've added allergies, ingredients to avoid, or preferences to your profile, Grain derives a personalized score on your device on top of that base — and the score breakdown shows exactly which profile factors moved the number.

Scanning

Why doesn't Grain have my product?

Grain looks products up in public food databases and, where needed, builds an entry using AI grounded in live web search. If a scan returns "product not found," the item isn't in those sources yet. Email contact@grainios.com with the barcode and a photo — we'll look into adding it.

Why does Grain need camera access?

To scan barcodes, identify products from a photo, and scan receipts. The camera is only active while you're on a scanning screen, and photos you take are sent for analysis only when you use those features.

Does Grain work offline?

Partially. Previously scanned products are cached locally and viewable offline. New scans require an internet connection to look up data and run AI analysis.

Which countries does Grain support?

Grain supports six regulatory regions — United States, European Union, United Kingdom & Ireland, Canada, Australia & New Zealand, and Switzerland — in five languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German. Your region is detected from your device automatically and can be changed in the app.

Subscriptions

What's free and what's Premium?

Barcode scanning is free and unlimited — scores and full ingredient analysis on scanned products never count against a quota. AI-powered features — product search, Ask Grain chat, Explore, photo identification, Smart Swap, manual entry, and receipt scanning — each include 3 free uses per account, and they refresh every 30 days (for Ask Grain, a whole conversation counts as one use). A use only counts when the feature succeeds. Premium removes those limits and unlocks Shop Smart recommendations. It starts with a 7-day free trial, then $29.99/year or $3.99/month. Cancel anytime.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are billed through the App Store:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  2. Tap your name at the top
  3. Tap Subscriptions
  4. Select Grain and choose Cancel Subscription

Your subscription remains active until the end of the current billing period.

I was charged but Premium isn't showing up.

Open the upgrade screen from Profile and tap Restore at the top. If that doesn't work, email us with the order ID from your Apple receipt and we'll sort it out.

Can I get a refund?

All refund requests go through Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, find the Grain subscription, and request a refund. EU and UK consumers retain their statutory 14-day withdrawal rights.

Privacy

What data does Grain collect?

Your email (if you make an account), your scan history, favorites, reviews, and any health preferences you add — allergies, ingredients to avoid, dietary goals. We also collect app analytics and crash reports to keep Grain working. There are no ads and no ad SDKs in the app. The full privacy policy has the details.

How do I export my data?

In the app: Profile → Account Settings → Download My Data (you'll need to be signed in). You'll get a JSON file with your profile, scan history, and favorites. Takes under a minute.

How do I delete my account?

Profile → Account Settings → Delete Account. Deletion is immediate and irreversible: your reviews, favorites, scan history, and health profile are removed from our servers, then the account itself is deleted. Export your data first if you want a copy.

Account

Do I need an account to use Grain?

No. Grain works without an account — you can scan barcodes and see scores right away. You'll need a free account for the AI-powered features (free uses are tracked per account), cloud-synced favorites, reviews, and Premium.

I found incorrect information — how do I report it?

Email contact@grainios.com with the product barcode and what's wrong. We verify every flagged issue and correct it.

How do I report an abusive review or user?

Tap the menu on any review in the app and choose Report, or choose Block User from the same menu — their reviews will no longer appear to you. We review every report and act on violations.
